Are you, like most of us, trying to learn about and understand Artificial Intelligence? The difference between Generative AI and Agentic AI? The strengths, opportunities, benefits of AI as well as the threats, weaknesses and risks; also, the leadership skills necessary to increase the likelihood of introducing and developing AI successfully into your organization..
Recently, I have run a series of classes at Fundacao Dom Cabral on Noble Leadership in an Age of AI. We looked at some of the important and compelling research findings which lead to a better understanding of what AI is, how it can be used most effectively, and how one best deals with the attendant risks and challenges. We explored how Noble Leadership concepts and tools can be used to deal effectively with all these issues.
By way of example of this emerging research, A McKinsey & Co article reports the following:
In the news. Using AI to automate tedious tasks at work may backfire, The Wall Street Journal reports. While employees can save working time with tools that, for example, summarize meetings or sort their emails, some find that more of their time is filled with cognitively demanding work. This shift can fuel cognitive overload and burnout instead of enabling strategic thinking and work–life balance. Overreliance on automated tools can also dull judgment and reduce practical learning. For companies, the challenge is harnessing the productivity benefits of AI without eroding employee engagement or critical thinking.
How do you as a leader respond to this opportunity/challenge? Is it the responsibility of the individual, the organization, or both to identify and resolve potential employee overload and burnout and the loss of critical thinking skills? We note that the key competencies needed for successful AI implementation (this comes from other research we’ll discuss in the future) include: critical thinking, decision-making, judgment, aspiration setting, communication and collaboration, continuous learning, and learning from mistakes. How can we develop these competencies and equally important, how can we keep from losing them.
Organizational purpose is an important starting point to examine these questions. Does your organization focus primarily on the shareholder value model, the stakeholder value model, the shared value model or the B-Corp model? In essence, how important are your employees among the stakeholders? And if you say, “employees are our most important asset,” what does this really mean? What organizational attitudes and behaviors does it imply? Does your organization walk the talk?
Next, what about you as a leader. Let’s look at the four Quantum Powers of Noble Leadership: (1) Higher Purpose; (2) Living Values; (3) Human spirit; and (4) Oneness Consciousness.
First, what is your higher purpose as a leader? How does AI relate to that purpose? How do the reported WSJ findings reinforce or constrain your higher purpose aspirations and goals.
Second, what are your values as a leader? Can you live these values to address and respond authentically to AI, and in particular, to address and resolve these reported WSJ findings? How do you integrate into your answer such immutable Noble Leader values as: honesty, trust, respect, loyalty, and fairness?
Third, how do you factor in the dimensions of Human Spirit which include: (a) inner vitality and resilience — courage, hope and perseverance; (b) moral and ethical core – what’s ‘the right thing” to do in this situation; and (c) creativity and meaning – using your experience, judgment and imagination to develop original successful solutions.
Fourth, and last, oneness consciousness. Everything is related to everything. Ultimately all the pieces must come together in a seamless and harmonious whole. As you approach Ai in general and these research findings in particular, do your answers support and reinforce your purpose, mission, strategy and culture? We’ll share other AI research findings in the coming days, and again we will examine how Noble Leadership concepts and tools can be useful to address the emerging AI opportunities and challenges.
